Highlands Behavioral Health System Reviews ( 182 )

  1. Don’t send anyone you love here! no consideration for the patient only for making money for their hospital. Nurses and doctors are not qualified to run this facility.

  2. This place said there would be a psychiatrist that would see us right away and that was not the case a therapist saw us and then tried to just get us to stay the night and spend a ton of money there. I would not recommend this place ever to anyone.

  3. Staff seems’ok’ but im not sure what problem they have.
My wife had an episode.this was the only place I could try to get her help.
I pray they are able to help her

  4. This place is literally garbage. Maybe one out of ten people working there have any interest in helping those whom are struggling. They will treat you like a criminal and drug addict.

  5. My son went in to the facility and we were both unsure since we hadn’t dealt with this before but he came out quickly, feeling much better and had a plan for how not to repeat the mistake.

  6. I was inpatient in the Horizon unit for 6 days, I realized once I returned to my life how much it helped me. I would recommend this location for anyone dealing with depression, or suicidal thoughts! Thank you!

  7. I went there and I was scare I didn’t know what to do because I’m deaf. And I’m afraid to be around someone but I found my new friends he nice person I forgot his name but anyway he made me safe and comfortable 😊 …

  8. there was a staff here one night when i was here a few months back and she got very mad for some reason and started throwing chairs around and yelling at us . which doesn’t help if we aren’t mentally stable . other staff are okay just that one i hope she got fired she is not professional at all .

  9. I’ve called this place twice to get information when I was there. Not a single person has been able to pick up the phone. These people are most incompetent I’ve ever met.

  10. Put on a bogus MH Cert by junior psychiatrist snob and held for a week without any psychiatric grounds at all. Scam. Medicare/Medicaid fraud. Messed my life up. Will be legal. …

  11. Asked by the “owner” to contact for a conversation but gives me the main number instead of a direct line. Give me a break. Do not place your loved one’s in this facility! DO NOT WORK HERE IF YOUR ARE A SOCIAL WORKER LOOKING TO GET EXPERIENCE! DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU HAVE YOUR LICENSE! THIS PLACE IS A RISK ON ALL LEVELS!

  12. This place is definitely about the money I have my grandson there and I needed to take him home and they placed another emergency hold on him they gave him medication without permission they never diagnosed him with anything they told me …

  13. It was a great facility I went there for eight days and the staff was so kind a treated me with great respect they helped me get through my tough time and the things I learned at group helped me so much ,the food was good, the staff was …

  14. I was put in the adolescent ward 2 years ago and I got very sick. I was throwing up constantly and they were insisting I had an eating disorder and needed treatment for it. …

  15. Please do NOT send any loved ones here. This place is horrible and should go out of business. All they care about is money. The staff here was mean and inconsiderate. They were very lazy at there job considering someone snuck a razor blade …

  16. Took my 14 year old here. Safe place, clean facilities and friendly staff. Keep in mind that this is a place that stabilizes your child and keeps them safe. Use this time to find proper after care. The after care program here still needs a little work.

  17. Very careless practice. All they want – to make money on you and do as less as possible and to bill your insurance as much as possible. Very very bad facility. I am going to file complain and law suit for negligence. Hope that health department will close this place.

  18. Unfortunate experience with a family member that was struggling. Reached out to HBH to inquire about alternatives since they had been helpful in the past with both Inpatient/Outpatient options We were told that “the staff remembered her …

  19. Ridiculous place! Gave the special “pt number” and some rude RN wouldn’t let us talk to the pt. Unbelievable that a mental health place doesn’t support the patients mental health by “allowing” people who were given the “special pt. number” …

  20. I met multiple kids that had been to juvie and all of them said they had a better experience there than here. People would express not feeling safe to go home and would get discharged anyways.

  21. Terrible place, they took my brother from ER without my permission or informing me. Please keep your love one away from this place. I really have hard time to get a hold of my brother. The staff needs to be in the some sort of behavior program, very ill-mannered, unprofessional and rude.

  22. I was a adolescent at highlands and I had a over all pretty good stay, most of us we’re in there for suicide and were yelled at by a couple nurses and that made me a little upset because we are there for a ‘safe place’. The food is good and I felt safe and would definitely recommend it

  23. I was on the Adolescent wing for a week about a year ago. I honestly had a pretty good time after I was admitted. I was able to get the help I needed and was treated with kindness and care from the staff. If you go in with a positive mindset you’ll come out with a good experience.

  24. This place have my son medicine that has negative effects with medicine he was already taking. The two meds combined can cause seizures, coma, or death in many cases. If you want your loved one to stay healthy I don’t suggestion this place at all.

  25. They accepted my adult daughter who was transported over 3 hours from there and they wouldn’t except her due to her medical issues – mainly the walker. Could they not have read her intake information and told us prior to transporting her so she could stay closer to her home area.

  26. We were very skeptical after reading reviews on this site
I am happy to report we had a very positive experience.
Our child saw and interacted with physicians daily. We were very happy with the care received here.

  27. Poor moral in majority of staff. There are a few good folks who seemed to care but the overall tone was meat market, Bring them in ship them out. i took daughter there for her improvement from a supportive consutative staff to assist her in …

  28. For those wondering why there is such mixed reviews, it’s really quite simple: This place is great if you are rich and have great insurance, but if you are poor and have little to no insurance this is nothing more than a prison you have to …

  29. I was in the adult horizon unit for 48 hours…..I’m truly surprised with the negative reviews! The food was good, you have to wear paper scrubs but can request clothing from friends or family to be more comfortable….every staff member I …

  30. I was on 175 mg of medication and they made me go off of them cold turkey. I spent four days in this facility dizzy, lightheaded and nauseous and the staff did nothing. Not to mention there were several occasions when kids were supposed to …

  31. My 15 year old daughter has been in this facility for 6 days and I cannot be more pleased with the staff. They have been very caring and supportive. My daughter has said everyday that everyone was so nice there. I feel she got the care and support that she needed during her stay there.

  32. I took my child here because she was self harming. DO NOT EVER take your child to this facility. They put her in isolation for two days because she was in the same room as someone with the flu. She received no care during this time. She …

  33. Watch you step at Highlands! Make sure your MD & Psych docs compare meds with each other! I checked myself in & when the 48 hour hold was over , they forced me to sign in for how ever long they wanted to keep me. To top it all off, the over …

  34. Our loved one was brought to HBH as part of a 72 hour hold after a suicide attempt. She stayed one week and was transferred to a RTC. Reading the reviews before hand, we were extremely afraid sending her here. However, our experience with …

  35. I was hospitalized for a week (7 days), I fell out of the shower, in my room, from the floor being soaked with water, because the shower curtain had about 5 inches of gap on each side, the water constantly went onto floor. Now there were …

  36. The food is average, chairs are hard and uncomfortable, staff asume people faking tics/tourettes, staff respects triggers and pronouns but not preferred name, and very little privacy when using the bathroom/showering. Overall my experience was 7/10

  37. I can’t complain. They took me in when I was in a great deal of need. They treated me very well on the Horizon Unit and I felt extremely safe there. The things I learned there are priceless and really helped me with my life and all that was going on in it. Thank you for another chance of day, Highlands!

  38. My 25 yro disabled son John is there (over 70 miles away from us) now, and he has history of very severe pediatric traumatic brain injuries he sustained at age 10 from being hit by a truck that ran a red light as he was walking to school. …

  39. Thank god im not the only person with an extremely horrific experience here. I think about this place everyday and i’ve been out for a while now. Please if you truly care about someone and they need to be safe do NOT bring them here. Since …

  40. I was told he would get med the day he got there it was 3 days later still no meds, I was told the doctor was out sick. So I guess they only have one doctor that can write a script. Do not let you child go there worst experience ever. We were going through enough we didn’t need the hassle of fighting to get him help!

  41. Some staff were nice. Place is well kept clean. But I felt like the only way out was faking my happiness & well being. In reality I wasn’t okay but I hated being locked up in that prison. Being in there made me more depressed. I was there …

  42. I was placed into the Adolescent Unit under the 72 hour hold about a year ago. It was a joke. My discharge date was affected because I wasn’t participating in group therapy. Do you know how annoying it is to listen to the same stuff all the …

  43. I was just discharged yesterday after staying for three days. I was in the adult horizon unit for depression/suicidal ideation/panic disorder. I’m truly surprised at all of the bad reviews. I had such a positive experience all Highlands. …

  44. I had a potentially DEADLY side effect from an antipsychotic. The night nurse, Paula, would not take me seriously beside the fact that my blood pressure continuously increased by the minute and my heart rate had increased to a whopping 200 …

  45. Just wanted to say this place saved my marriage and family. My wife was battling some severe bipolar depression and suicidal actions. The doctors and staff at this facility gave her the proper medications and tools she needed to cope with …

  46. Longer review on YELP. Voluntary patient, 8 day stay (tues-wednesday).

What can I say in the few words I have? The staff ratio of 12 patients to 1 …

  47. Awful staff. Super short and even rude. I have had 2 of my kids come here (only bc nowhere else has a bed when we need one, I’m sure bc everyone requests to go anywhere BUT here) but they always seem rushed and annoyed with you. My kids hated it. I really wish CO had better options for kids in need….

  48. My adult son is a patient here. I knew because a caring and kind counselor from the ER in my town let me know. I have called this facility 4 times in the past 3 days. Depending on which staff member answered the phone, I was treated very …

  49. Absolutely a terrible place physically and mentally. After specifically telling them, towards the end of my stay, that I was no longer suicidal, they noted down that I was “extremely suicidal and depressed”. Along with this they would not …

  50. I have been to Highlands a couple of times to do there PHP program. It was a life changing experience. Now this time it was a horrible experience. I will never return nor will I ever recommend this facility to anyone. There is no structure, …

  51. Went here for PHP or IOP assessment. They were 10-15 minutes late for my appt then took me and my husband back to intake and started to process me for hospitalization instead of IOP. When I told them I wasn’t here for hospitalization they …

  52. If I could give less than 1 star I would. Unfortunately, this was my daughter’s 6th time being hospitalized, but her first time here. This was by far the worst facility she has been at. We didn’t have a family meeting except for her …

  53. Well…I was in a rough spot at the time, and I needed a place to go to get help. They admitted me to this place, which ended up being a huge mistake. The staff obviously had no care for the patients. They bossed us around and took …

  54. I’ve been inpatient 4 times and this facility was by far the worst. I told them from the moment I arrived I’d ended up on an m1 hold largely because my work schedule made it almost impossible to make a psychiatrist appointment and I needed …

  55. It is beyond difficult to get an appointment here, so be prepared to wait weeks and weeks to schedule. Do your self a favor and RUN someplace else. The quality of the care is sub par. I had nothing but a bad experiance. I brought my son …

  56. This facility is an absolute disgrace. The lack of care and disregard exhibited by the staff is appalling. A dear friend of mind was referred to this location and after struggling with thoughts of self-harm and suicide she decided to call …

  57. This has been the worst experience I’ve ever been through with my child. My child was there for almost 48 hrs and I hadn’t heard from anyone. I called several times, left messages with no return phone call. I finally called and left a …

  58. I am the parent of an adolescent patient. Please note that a LOT of the reviews on this page are from patients involuntarily held at the facility for a brief period, and should not be used to judge how this place actually works. Their views …

  59. First, look up Carson Magines to get an idea of this place… If you want to get better, escape your problems, and hope for a better tomorrow, this place isn’t it. Now there were a few really good staff members that I met while I stayed …

  60. I do not even want to give 1 star from the experience we had with this supposed Behavioral Health Company. We asked to speak to someone about their Outpatient Programing, instead we were treated unfairly and felt violated beyond measure. We …

  61. I was hospitalized here a couple years ago, it was my first time ever in such a facility and it was rather scary at first. I arrived late in the night and hadn’t eaten that day and has missed the normal dinner time but the staff still found …

  62. We had a very disappointing and quite scary experience. The doctor refused to review or read any previous tests that we had done. He refused to speak with our current treatment team including therapist and doctor who have treated for many …

  63. This place needs a 0. They are listening to a 13 year old, who doesnt like having rules. They won’t discharge our son, they told us they will have us escorted off the property if we try to take him home. They are after money. We have had …

  64. Highlands does not provide enough access for patients to their family and support systems. They limit phone access to two 45 minute windows a day. They do not have enough phones for patients allotted 10 minute conversation window. If the …

  65. Basically prison. Every day there I’d look out the window at the Taco Bell way in the distance hoping to be free like everyone else at Taco Bell. I was 18 but put in the kids ward but apparently I was too “old” and had a room all by …

  66. Unbelievable follow up. My daughter was released 2 weeks ago. We still cannot get her prescription filled because the doctor didnt fill it out right. Her follow up with a psychiatrist isnt until March!!!! We have called multiple times, we …

  67. They will talk to your under the pretense of being an outpatient facility, even if you say you “just need to talk” you will be forced into a minimum 72hour hold even if you are healthy, happy, and have never made a suicide attempt. The hold …

  68. A few of the staff members were kind and caring people, but a majority of them were just cold, insensitive, and even egotistical. A lot of them treated their patients as if they were inferior. None of them offered me any emotional …

  69. I agree with many other people on their opinions of this place. when we went to visit my sister in here we were always 30 minutes late to go into the visiting room because they were t ready for the visitors I guess. as we were getting ready …

  70. You’d think a psychiatric hospital would have, like, therapists, right? Their whole business model is ‘Let patients sit around until they decide not to kill themselves. If they take too long, discharge ’em anyway’ …

  77. This place steals from you. They do nothing to help patients. My girlfriend was put in on a 72 hour hold. They took the vape she had that belonged to me and didn’t give it back when she was released. Then, when I called to talk to them about how I could reclaim it, I was sent to some answering machine and never received a call back.

  78. I personally do not agree with some of these responses as I was also a patient here and experienced the BHA’s and other staff. Places like these have to have camera’s to catch self harm, touching, and overall people talking about bad …

  92. My daughter was discharged today. When I heard from her I could tell she was in no shape to be discharged. She was sent to a homeless shelter and even the people at the shelter said they were concerned about her mental health. They put her …

  93. This hospital showed no sign of respect and equity. If one person does something the rest shouldn’t be punished for it. Rather take care of the people who did it. I decided to speak out against it but rather got shunned by one of the nurses …

  94. The PHP program was amazing here along with the experiential therapists. I was a patient here from April-June of this year, and am STILL getting random bills here and there. Everytime I called the business office they told me I owed this or …

  95. My wife’s and my calls were also ignored but I did something about it that made it impossible for them to ignore me any longer. I walked in and spoke with a social worker in person, not my loved ones, but a social worker who gave me the run …

  97. My granddaughter is in their care. I have not felt this safe for her, for over a year. Everyone, from the intake personnel to the receptionist, are kind, compassionate, informative, and professional though I have no legal rights, but I trust they are taking the best care of her. Thank you

  101. This place is like a prison. The showers don’t have doors. You can’t use the phone when you want except for 4 minutes a day, the bedding is a joke with paper thin blankets and paper thin pillows. The “therapy” and activities are a joke. …

  102. Absolutely abhorrent care. Do not go here. Do not send your family here. The staff is unprofessional and emotionally and verbally abusive to patients. If you want your loved ones to become MORE suicidal, send them here. …

  106. I was admitted to inpatient care when I was 13. I am now an adult and I can say from experience that it was extremely traumatic for me, controlling and violating. Many of the nurses and physiatrists did not even care about us patients. Do not bring your kids here. It’s like a glorified jail.

  107. My 18-year-old who is suffering from delusions and paranoia was admitted because of fears that she was going to run away with no means to care for herself and while unable to distinguish between reality and fantasy. She stayed at Highlands …

  108. I went here a couple of years ago, and the only reason I’m writing a review is because of how frequently I think about how awful my experience was. I could literally write a book on everything that happened while I was there. Please take your loved ones to a better facility than this, personally Denver Springs is way better.

  109. I recently just discharged from here and this place was alright not the best experience tho. The night staff were completely rude and disrespectful to patients here treated us like were bothering them. I had a panic attack here and the …

  122. I was admitted on a 72 hr hold. I had a good experience. The nurse were always helpful. The therapist was always willing to talk. Nick is amazing person. The food was very good. The rooms wer clean. I’m so thankful for everyone there. My only complaint was th nurses always arguing with each other.

  123. This was by far one of the worst experiences I’ve had in my life. I was recently taken to the hospital by my parents for being suicidal. We thought that we’d go to the hospital, they’d link us up with some opportunities for help, and we’d …

  124. Please for the love of God. Do not allow your family member to be sent here. I begged Memorial Central in Colorado Springs to not transfer my son here! They did it anyway! What a total nightmare. Out of all the facilities and he’s been in …

  125. Very understaffed. With how little they pay I’m not surprised. The staff tries very hard but they don’t have the tools to help. I was hoping for at least someone to talk to but there are no therapists on staff. There are lots of groups but …

  126. Every night since I left (September 2021) I’ve been here in my dreams. My experiences at this hospital have given me diagnosed and clear PTSD centering the events here. At this facility you will be asked to earn more phone time with your …
